Details seem a little sketchy, but Toyota’s senior manager for drivetrain engineering, Koei Saga, told !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and is ready for a production decision. It seems that there is such a thing as a competition Prius in Japan, whose parts could be used.

Toyobaru with KERS? AWESOME (except for the inevitable price hike).

Only if you can activate the full electric power at once like a KERS system.

Like this.

Not gonna be so light is it?

That's fine. Having a KERS of sorts will give it the mid-range torque it apparently needs.

things the frs is- cheap, light and fun.

Things hybrids are - cheap, light or fun...pick two.

Last I heard the system was going to be a flywheel hybrid system, which doesn't really add much weight.

I feel like this is old news. I posted this in 2012 ... http://gas2.org/2012/11/10/sci…

Somebody NEEDS to make a combined Nitro and KERS system. Imagine the amount of power you'd get by pressing a button like that!

The source is just not clear: the KERS system is mentioned in the Autocar article, but there's more speculation about the modularity of the 'conventional' Prius/Lexus H electric system.

Lexus has it with RWD, and one would imagine it could be adapted to manual gearboxes. Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada told Autocar earlier about dealing with the weight by positioning it low down, and making use of underbody aerodynamics. In any case, they're developing a lighter version for the next Prius, and even the current lithium-ion system doesn't add that much in critical applications like the Yaris.

A battery based system does make sense for something as consumer oriented as the Toyobaru- even if most of us would probably prefer KERS.

Cheap and fun. It's the best combination of the 3 choices, and though it may not be light as long as the chassis is good and the suspension is well tuned it won't feel as heavy as it might be.

Well, if hybrid flywheels are the 2010's version of 1980's turbo, then count me in!

I dunno man, the TS030 only weighs around 900kg's

if they take 100kg's out of the frame like TRD reckon they can do, and then add another 150-200kg's of Hybrid it's still going to be pretty damn light.

I'll say it now - Honda CRZ killer.

Of course, the Honda CRZ pretty much killed itself..
